Work: Hawaiian Hero Debate
Class: Hawaiian History
Teacher: Mr. Adams
For this debate each student got to choose a person who has made an impact on Hawaiian history. I choose Alice Ball. She dedicated her life to finding the cure for leprosy, and she did! I had multiple rounds were I had to go against students leading up to the debate. These rounds included a quiz show were I had to answer quiz show style questions on my hero in front of the class, I wrote an argumentative essay that was a 2-3 page paper on my hero. Using meaningful research, and flex my best writing muscles. My classmates voted anonymously on the stronger essay. The third part of the competition was a portrait of my hero. I drew a portrait of my hero using my best artistic skills. The fourth round was a day in the life read and performance century. I Wrote a journal entry from the point of view of my hero. I choose a momentous day, getting in the spirit of my hero, and being creative. I read and performed it to the class. The class voted anonymously on the winner between me and my opponent. The final round was the debate. Coming head to head with my opponent in a debate on whose is the Greatest Hawaiian Hero. My classmates voted on the winner of the debate. This tough me interpersonal skills by demonstrating respect and positive interpersonal skills throughout all areas of my life. I successfully worked cooperatively as a member of a variety of teams. This project was lots of fun and taught me about Hawaiian history through hearing stories and other ways of communication to learn about people who have made big impacts on Hawaiian culture.
